Academic Growth of Students

The school accountability report released from the Colorado State Department of Education in December lists Ames as a school receiving the highest ranking of academic growth: Significant Improvement. This is calculated by examining student growth on a pupil by pupil basis, measuring a student against his/her own previous year’s performance. This is unique from other formats of assessment reporting (such as CSAP) in that it truly underscores the importance of every child receiving a rigorous education and making progress.

As exciting as it is to rank high as a whole school with academic gains at each grade level (as with the CSAP reports measuring our proficiency status), the growth report tells the bigger story. We know each child as an individual learner, set goals for academic success for each child, and then design an educational plan to support the goal all the while monitoring progress of each child. This positive academic growth report supplies student results supporting our promise to parents: an excellent education for your child.

Kindergarten
Kindergarten children at Lewis Ames are actively involved in becoming life long learners and risk takers, as well as, cooperative and motivated children in a very warm and caring environment. By providing developmentally appropriate practices, children engage in hands on learning activities that develop strong literacy, writing, math, science, and social studies skills. This is accomplished through individual, small and large group instruction, shared reading, interactive writing, guided reading groups and center activities. A kindergartner also explores art, music, technology, physical education, and library. Providing this type of environment for children ensures the social, emotional, physical, and academic development of every child, which allows them to become independent learners and develop the skills that they will need to succeed in first grade.

First Grade
Welcome to First Grade at Ames Elementary! Our goal as a first grade team is to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of all children, and to help them become more independent and achieve their highest potential. Our focus is on the LPS subject areas: reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and health. We promote a learning environment that is nurturing, safe, and engages the children in meaningful learning activities. Children are encouraged to show respect for themselves and others by being sensitive to the feelings and needs that exist in a community of young learners. We believe strongly that children are most successful when teachers, parents, and students work together as a team. We extend a warm welcome to you and encourage you to visit our classrooms in the near future.

Second Grade
Second grade is an exciting year at Ames Elementary. Second graders continue their growth as readers and writers. We celebrate Old Littleton Day after studying the history of Littleton. A visit to Prehistoric Journey at the Museum of Nature and Science is a highlight of our study of animals of the past.

Third Grade
Third grade at Ames Elementary is filled with a variety of exciting and challenging experiences. In science, students will learn with hands-on experiments through the study of simple machines, the solar system, matter and biomes/animals. In social studies, they will be introduced to the history of the American Revolution. Economics is another hands-on study of our money, profit/loss, supply/demand concepts. The third graders will be introduced to the world of cursive writing. They will also continue 6 1 traits of writing.

We read a variety of literature in guided reading groups while emphasizing expository reading. Students will also learn about biographies in language arts. Parents are invited to the “Afternoon with the Notables” where students dress up as the famous characters they studied as a culminating activity for this unit.

Field trips will include visits to the Imax Theater, museums, and plays. We also invite several guest speakers relating to our curriculum!

Fifth Grade
Welcome to Fifth Grade! Fifth Grade is a transitional year, bridging elementary and middle school. It is important for fifth grade students to become increasingly independent in their academic work, study habits, and their ability to solve personal problems in order to prepare for the challenges that await them. Recognizing the need for these organizational/study skills, our fifth grade program includes the use of a student planner. This planner gives teachers a tool to help students manage time and academic responsibilities.
